What Is a DTF Gang Sheet? How to Build One Online (Step by Step)

If you print shirts with a heat press, a DTF gang sheet is one of the cheapest ways to get a lot of full-color transfers at once. This guide explains what a gang sheet is, how sizing and pricing work, and exactly how to build one on our online builder at Backstage Tees in Longview, Texas.

What Is a DTF Gang Sheet?

DTF stands for direct-to-film. Your artwork is printed onto a special PET film with white ink underneath the colors, coated in a hot-melt adhesive powder, and cured. You then use a heat press to transfer the design from the film onto a shirt, hoodie, tote bag, hat or other item.

A gang sheet is simply one long sheet of DTF film with many designs "ganged" together on it. Instead of paying for each transfer separately, you pay for the size of the sheet and fit as many designs on it as you can. Left-chest logos, full-front prints, sleeve hits, neck tags, and kids' sizes can all go on the same sheet.

Why Use a Gang Sheet Instead of Single Transfers?

  • You pay by sheet size, not by design. The more tightly you arrange your artwork, the lower your cost per transfer.
  • Mix different designs. Different logos, colors, and sizes can share one sheet. Every color is printed at once, so there are no per-color setup fees.
  • Works on lots of fabrics. DTF transfers can be pressed on cotton, polyester, blends, and many other materials.
  • Print now, press later. Keep transfers on hand and press them when an order comes in.

How to Build a DTF Gang Sheet Online (Step by Step)

Our builder lets you lay out your sheet right in your browser. There's also a short how-to video on the product page that walks through each step.

  1. Open the builder. Go to Build a Gang Sheet and pick your sheet size.
  2. Start building. Click the button to open the gang sheet builder.
  3. Upload your artwork. Add your PNG files. Transparent-background PNGs at 300 DPI give the best results (see our artwork prep guide).
  4. Size each design. Set the width or height in inches to match where it'll go on the garment.
  5. Add copies and arrange. Duplicate designs to get the quantity you need, then fit them together with a little space between each one.
  6. Check your layout. Zoom in to make sure nothing is cut off at the edges and every design is the size you want.
  7. Add to cart and check out. Orders placed by 11 AM Central ship the same day.

Tips for Getting More Out of Every Sheet

  • Fill the empty spaces. Tuck small designs like left-chest logos, sleeve prints, and neck tags into gaps between larger prints.
  • Rotate designs. Turning a design sideways can let you fit another row.
  • Leave a small gap. Keep a little space between designs so they're easy to cut apart with scissors.
  • Measure your garments. Common full-front widths are around 10–12 inches for adult shirts. Check a real shirt before you size everything.
  • Not sure which size to pick? Our gang sheet size guide shows how to plan your layout.

How to Press Your DTF Transfers

Once your sheet arrives, cut out each design and press it with these settings:

  • Temperature: 300°F
  • Pre-press the garment: 3–5 seconds
  • Press the transfer: 15 seconds
  • Peel the film
  • Re-press: 8 seconds

Who Are Gang Sheets For?

Gang sheets work well for anyone who presses their own garments and wants several designs or several copies at once:

  • T-shirt businesses and apparel brands that sell multiple designs and want to press to order instead of holding finished inventory.
  • Boutiques adding custom or seasonal designs to blanks they already stock.
  • Schools, teams, and booster clubs that need the same logo in adult and youth sizes, plus sleeve or back prints.
  • Churches, reunions, and events where one design goes on a batch of shirts in different sizes.
  • Crafters and side businesses who want full-color prints without cutting and weeding vinyl.

Planning Your First Gang Sheet

A few minutes of planning before you open the builder saves time and money:

  1. Make a list of what you need. Write down each design, the size it should be printed, and how many copies you need. Include different sizes for youth and adult shirts if you need both.
  2. Measure a real garment. Lay a shirt flat and measure the area where the print will go. Designs that look right on screen can be too big or too small on an actual shirt.
  3. Get your files ready. Make sure every design is a transparent PNG, large enough to print sharply at the size you need.
  4. Estimate the sheet length. Use the formula in our size guide to get a rough idea of how many designs fit, then choose the closest sheet size.
  5. Add a few extras. If you have empty space left over, fill it with extra copies or small logos. A spare transfer is handy if a shirt gets misplaced on the press.

Common Gang Sheet Mistakes to Avoid

  • Low-resolution files. An image that looks fine on your phone may print blurry at 10 inches wide.
  • White boxes behind designs. If your PNG has a solid background, that background will print.
  • Designs too close to the edge. Keep artwork fully inside the sheet so nothing is trimmed off.
  • No space between designs. Designs that touch are hard to cut apart cleanly.
  • Wrong sizes. Double-check the width of each design in inches before checking out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a DTF gang sheet?

Our gang sheets are 22 inches wide, and you choose a length from 24 inches up to 240 inches.

Can I put different designs on one gang sheet?

Yes. You can mix as many different designs and sizes as will fit on the sheet.

What file type should I upload?

A PNG with a transparent background at 300 DPI, sized at the actual print size, works best.

Do I need special equipment to apply DTF transfers?

You need a heat press that can hold 300°F. A household iron doesn't give the even heat and pressure DTF needs.

How fast will I get my gang sheet?

Orders placed by 11 AM Central ship the same day. Delivery time depends on the shipping method and your location.
